Hall: When we write memoir, we choose what matters from a vast reservoir of memories—which story, which people—and we examine the truths and the myths of our narratives. I don’t see fiction as a separate act. For me, even in fiction, the story is there, it is mine, it is carved into me, as if I have lived that story, too.
